raising taxes, taking money out of the economy, damages the economy, kills jobs, reduces opportunities. >> you know, the latest cnn polls that just came out this week say you're wrong. two or three americans, including a majority of republicans, say the fiscal cliff should be addressed with a mix, a mix of spending cuts, yes, but also tax increases and if there's no deal according to these polls, they're going to blame republicans more than they blame the president. all the best evidence right now suggests the public wants to see the republicans compromise on this tax question. so from a political standpoint, is it okay for lawmakers to ignore the pledge that they gave earlier? >> well, the challenge is that the pledge that they made and that every two years comes up again in campaigns, this is not an ancient pledge, these are pledges that get discussed every election cycle, democrats in the last two cycles have attacked all the republicans who took the pledge.
